Job summary

The City of Cortez, CO is seeking a Code Compliance Inspector to uphold property maintenance, municipal, and land use codes. This full-time, onsite position runs Monday–Friday (40 hours/week) and collaborates closely with the Cortez Police Department and community members.

The role involves field visits, documenting cases, issuing notices, and communicating next steps to residents, merchants, and contractors while utilizing GIS and database systems for case management.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Valid Colorado driver’s license and ability to travel for mandatory training.
• Knowledge of enforcement principles, including 4th Amendment considerations.
• Ability to obtain ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector Certification within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints and observed violations; document findings and case activity.
• Issue notices, coordinate voluntary compliance, and support enforcement actions within legal parameters.
• Communicate clearly with residents, merchants, and contractors; prepare written reports and correspondence.
• Use tools such as database systems (Citizens Serve or similar), GIS mapping, and field technology.
