Job summary

The City of Cortez, CO is seeking a Code Compliance Inspector to uphold property maintenance, municipal, and land use codes. This full-time, onsite position runs Monday–Friday (40 hours/week) and collaborates closely with the Cortez Police Department and community members.

The role involves field visits, documenting cases, issuing notices, and communicating next steps to residents, merchants, and contractors while utilizing GIS and database systems for case management.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and ability to travel for mandatory training.
  • Knowledge of enforcement principles, including 4th Amendment considerations.
  • Ability to obtain ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector Certification within 12 months.

Job description

What You’ll Handle

The Code Compliance Inspector helps keep Cortez safe, clean, and orderly by applying the City’s Property Maintenance, Municipal, and Land Use codes fairly and consistently. This full-time, onsite role works Monday–Friday (40 hours/week) and partners closely with the Cortez Police Department and community members.

  • Investigate complaints and observed violations; document findings and case activity
  • Issue notices, coordinate voluntary compliance, and support enforcement actions within legal parameters
  • Communicate clearly with residents, merchants, and contractors; prepare written reports and correspondence
  • Use tools such as database systems (Citizens Serve or similar), GIS mapping, and field technology
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus related compliance/code enforcement or law enforcement experience (or equivalent combination)
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license; ability to travel for mandatory training
  • Working knowledge of enforcement principles (including 4th Amendment considerations)
  • Ability to obtain AACE/ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector Certification within 12 months

A Typical Workday

Your morning starts in the field, moving through neighborhoods and commercial areas and checking on open cases. You’ll balance scheduled follow-ups with new calls that come in, then capture photos and notes on a phone or camera and update records in the system. Midday often includes conversations at a job site or storefront—explaining next steps, timelines, and options in a calm, respectful way. Back at the office, you’ll organize documentation, map locations in GIS, and coordinate with internal partners as needed. The day wraps with planning tomorrow’s routes and ensuring case files are complete and ready for the next action.
