Job summary

Canyon County is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to ensure compliance with county land use and development ordinances. The role operates mainly in the field with some office work under supervision.

The officer will review codes, educate the public, maintain enforcement records, respond to complaints, and coordinate with legal staff for hearings. Strong communication and investigative skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of county, state, and other applicable public nuisance, zoning, building code, solid waste, general health, subdivision, rural addressing, and related codes and ordinances
• Public relations and education, communication, and customer service principles and techniques
• Investigative and enforcement methods, including documentation, record-keeping, hearings and legal proceedings
• Research, documentation and conflict resolution methods
• Collaborative work with public servants and the public to provide high-quality service
• Maintain confidentiality and impartiality
• Prepare oral and written reports and maintain comprehensive records
• Operate a computer and vehicle

Responsibilities

• Code Review: conducts code/ordinance reviews and investigates complaints
• Advises and educates the public on violations and compliance
• Maintains inspection/enforcement files and assists in databases/maps
• Responds to complaints and enforces zoning/building/public nuisance ordinances
• Administers preliminary sanctions per codes and procedures
• Initiates legal proceedings in coordination with County staff; schedules hearings
• Presents reports to the Board of County Commissioners
• Performs duties in accordance with County policies and safety rules
