Colby College is seeking a Museum Security Officer responsible for safeguarding the museum collection and ensuring safety for patrons and staff. The role includes monitoring security systems, providing customer service, and responding to emergencies. Candidates should have a high school diploma and experience in security or law enforcement, along with First Aid and CPR certification.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities
To perform successfully in this position, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily as well as possess education/experience, employ the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed in representative fashion. Work closely with museum staff in developing and implementing museum security procedures
Monitor all museum patrons and ensure they adhere to museum protocols and policies
Provide informational assistance and promote good public relations
Maintain an alertness for suspicious activity
Provide first response in emergency situations, administering First Aid and CPR as necessary
Work effectively with the public and provide excellent customer service and assistance
Monitor museum CCTV, intrusion, and life safety systems
Keep logs, security checklists, and art inventories on a daily basis
Provide safety and security inspections of all areas of the museum once a month or as needed
Report security violations and write incident reports when necessary
Provide personal safety and security services for students, faculty, staff and visitors
Become thoroughly knowledgeable of the museum facility, CCTV, intrusion, life safety and HVAC/mechanical systems
Position Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education a plus
Campus security and/or law enforcement experience preferred
Must have or obtain and maintain, First Aid and CPR certification
Advanced First Aid or Emergency Medical Technician experience preferred
Knowledge of museum security and intrusion/life safety systems is helpful
Must present a neat, clean and professional image
Display a quiet and courteous customer friendly attitude at all times
Ability to use a two-way radio
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
Basic computer skills including experience using Microsoft Suite, Google, email and web applications
Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
There may be occurrences of employees, past employees, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
