Job summary

Brooklyn Museum Maintenance is seeking a Museum Maintainer – Engine Room to operate and maintain the building's central plant and HVAC systems, including chillers, pumps, boilers, and related equipment. The role requires troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and coordination with safety teams to support gallery spaces, public areas, and the collections.

The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration, is comfortable with PPE, and holds or will pursue NYC

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years’ experience on HVAC/electrical systems.
  • NYC FDNY Refrigeration Machine Operator License (Q-01/Q-99) preferred.
  • Certifications such as FDNY S-12 to G-60 and OSHA 30-Hr are recommended; sponsorship available.
  • Experience with pneumatic/electronic/electric controls and VFDs.
  • Willingness to obtain required licenses and work at height or in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; comfortable with ladders/scaffolding.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, repair, test, and maintain pumping, refrigeration systems, boilers, and HVAC equipment.
  • Align motors, pumps, shafts, gearboxes; repack seals and replace mechanical seals.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs in all mechanical/non-gallery areas; fabricate/install fixtures.
  • Update logs daily; document work orders, inspections, and equipment conditions.
  • Order supplies and manage inventory; coordinate with Supervising Museum Maintainer.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and software for automation systems.
  • Coordinate emergency procedures with Fire Department and other agencies.
  • Carry out electrical repairs during after-hours, weekends, and emergencies.
  • Ensure safety of buildings, collections, staff, and visitors; protect equipment.
