Job summary

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking an Engineering Shop Supervising Maintainer to oversee HVAC operation, repair and preventive maintenance across Museum spaces. You will schedule daily work, supervise Maintainers, and report to management while managing supplies and equipment.

Applicants should have a high school diploma, an NYC Refrigeration Operator's license, and at least three years of museum maintenance experience, with centrifugal chillers and BMS systems.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses a vast and priceless collection of art which requires a stable environment for preservation and conservation. Integral to this, is the operation, maintenance and repair of an extensive Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and the supporting equipment such as centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, air handlers, and associated steam systems. The Engineering Shop Supervising Maintainer is responsible for supervision of the performance of general building repair and maintenance. This includes but is not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical and painting work. The Supervising Maintainer will establish and schedule daily assignments, provide reporting to management and be responsible for the custody and issuance of supplies and equipment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  • Supervision of Maintainers and Assistant Maintainers on the shift
  • Performs highly responsible independent work in the operation, maintenance and repair of all Museum mechanical equipment
  • Supervises the maintenance of environmental conditions in all Museum spaces
  • Makes routine examination of the need for repairs, estimates of labor time, job costs and orders necessary materials and equipment to adequately complete work with the approval of management
  • Supervise and prepare reports on work completed, materials used and other required records
  • Thorough and complete knowledge of the Museum's HVAC equipment and its operation
  • Supervise and manage the HVAC water treatment systems throughout the Museum
  • Thorough and complete knowledge of the Museum's floor plans and buildings
  • Assign daily work to maintainers and follow-up through completion
  • Respond to building emergencies
  • Monitor and respond to BMS alarms
  • Preventative maintenance and repair
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Performs related work as required by the Museum including work on special projects and work within all buildings owned or operated by the Museum
  • Duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Valid New York City Fire Department Refrigeration Operator's License
  • Supervisor experience preferred
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Minimum three years experience in subject museum maintenance work or equivalent
  • Minimum three years experience with centrifugal chillers and associated mechanical equipment
  • Working knowledge of BMS systems and HVAC controls
  • Specialized skill as a mechanic
COMPENSATION RATE:

Pay Rate: $47.87891 / Hourly The advertised starting salary rate reflects the good faith minimum and maximum hourly rate for this role. Starting salary rates are set in accordance with established union rates provided by the economic agreement as established and negotiated by DC 37 and the City of New York, Office of Labor Relations. * Incumbent rates may vary depending on an individual employee’s seniority status, and/or based on terms as provided by the DC 37 Local 1503 and Museum collective bargaining agreement.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. “Commuting distance” means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the “Tri-state and PA” areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
