Job summary

Munson in Utica, NY is seeking a Museum Educator for Academic and Docent Programs to develop engaging experiences that connect students, educators, families, adults, and docents with the Museum’s collections and exhibitions.

The role manages the docent program and internship efforts, plans tours and trainings, oversees outreach to colleges, and partners with the Education team to align classroom work with New York State standards.

Qualifications

• BA/BS degree or higher in Art History, Museum Studies, Education, Art Education, or related field
• Three years or more of experience in a museum or similar cultural organization, including developing and planning educational programs and supervising individuals and projects
• Knowledge of NY State learning standards and current practices in art education, museum work, and education theory

Responsibilities

• Plan and schedule docent meetings, briefings, and educational sessions
• Provide docents with orientation and interpretive training on exhibitions to engage visitors and tour groups of all ages
• Provide docents with continuing education and prepare educational materials on current interactive methodology and collection knowledge
• Initiate and supervise docent recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation
• Maintain docent information on the web page and scheduling resources
• Present tours as needed when a docent is unavailable or for special tours
• Identify and engage guest speakers for docent trainings and briefings
• Coordinate tour dates and times for groups and schedule docents
• Manage the internship programs including project development and student supervision
• Develop connections between Munson’s collections and school curricula and align with NY standards
• Develop educator training workshops and maintain educator web pages
• Oversee school and community outreach events and partnerships
• Contribute to grants supporting educational activities and initiatives
• Maintain Museum Education database for scheduling and reports
