Job summary

Toole Design in Oakland, CA is seeking a Practice Lead to oversee integrated transportation engineering and multimodal planning. You will mentor engineers and planners, shape technical direction, and lead major projects while reporting to the Engineering Director.

The role requires 15+ years in transportation engineering and planning, leadership, and business development skills, plus a commitment to equity and safe streets. PE preferred; hybrid work schedule with in-office days.

Qualifications

• Commitment to technical excellence as a standard for complex projects.
• Ability to bridge planning and engineering with clear vision.
• 15+ years of transportation engineering and multimodal planning experience.
• Proven success in building and leading teams, programs and projects.
• Experience in business development and client development.
• Belief that strong engineering strengthens planning and placemaking.

Responsibilities

• Lead business development and practice planning to meet annual growth targets.
• Support the practice's financial health through project delivery and staff development.
• Collaborate with leadership to advance practice priorities.
• Recruit and advise on hiring to grow the local and firmwide practice.
• Advance training, innovation, and quality control across the team.
• Raise the practice's visibility and strengthen client relationships.
• Provide leadership on major transportation planning and engineering projects.
• Lead multimodal street design and corridor reconfigurations with safe systems principles.
