Job summary

SIMCO, LLC in Carlsbad, NM seeks a Mine Operations Field Engineer / PSTR to join the team at WIPP. The role combines hands-on field engineering with contract oversight, advancing mining operations while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

You will monitor production, coordinate with mining management and third-party contractors, and help drive efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental compliance. The position requires DOE badge access and eventual PSTR qualification within 12 months.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with five (5) years of managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities.
  • Associate’s degree with nine (9) years of managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency with thirteen (13) years of managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site.
  • Non-U.S. citizens from certain countries face additional security requirements.

Overview

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Mine Operations Field Engineer/ PSTR and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Responsibilities
  • The selected candidate will acquire the PSTR qualification and pass an oral board within 12 months of assuming the job.
  • Primary technical interface between mining operations management and third‑party contractors.
  • Ensure that field work—ranging from infrastructure construction to specialized maintenance—is executed safely, on time, and according to technical specifications.
  • Advance operational optimization by monitoring production, evaluating geological data, and implementing mining techniques to maximize resource recovery while lowering costs.
  • This role combines hands‑on field troubleshooting (Field Engineer) with contractual compliance and oversight (PSTR).
  • Assume formally or informally delegated responsibilities for the other managers, when needed.
  • Advocate and demonstrate personal commitment to safety, in both word and action.
  • Ensure compliance with DOE Orders, Hazardous Waste Facility Permit, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), and Code of Federal Regulations 29 and 30.
  • Work on the front lines to ensure mining operations are efficient and technical systems are functioning correctly.
  • Provide on‑site technical support to operations and maintenance teams
  • Conduct site inspections to identify opportunities for improvements in efficiency, safety, or environmental compliance.
  • Apply technical problem solving to troubleshoots, equipment failures and operational bottlenecks to keep production running
  • Support Mine Engineering Manager in providing direction and support to execution team under Mine Production Manager by timely delivery of plans and projections.
  • Interface, coordinate, and maintain working relationships with all WIPP departments as necessary.
  • Complete all duties as required in PSTR role.
Minimum Requirements

Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree with five (5) years of managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities, or
  • Associate’s degree with nine (9) years of experience managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities, or
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency with thirteen (13) years of managing/supervising construction projects, service contracts, and/or maintenance/repair activities.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries— are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
Preferred Requirements
  • Previous supervisory and/or management experience is preferred.
  • Mining Related preferred certification – Society of Mining Engineers, etc.
Salary Range

$96,789 to $172,368 per year. Exempt grade level(s) 32-34. The specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
