Job summary

West Valley School District is hiring a Student Advocate for the Migrant Education Program (MEP) in Yakima, WA. The role focuses on coordinating support for migrant students with counselors to ensure successful grade progression, high school completion, and transition to postsecondary education or employment.

Responsibilities include collaborating with the MEP director, identifying goals, offering targeted services, and connecting families with district and community resources.

Qualifications

• Experience in education, community advocacy, or a related field, preferably working with at‑risk migrant students and families.
• Knowledge of secondary education programs and state/local graduation requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication in English and the primary language of the students served (e.g., Spanish).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with school and community partners.
• Strong interpersonal, time‑management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to analyze student data and provide targeted support.

Responsibilities

• Identify migrant students at risk of not meeting academic standards and determine barriers affecting their success.
• Develop and monitor individualized academic, transition, and postsecondary goals with students, families, counselors, and school staff.
• Connect students and families with school and community resources to address barriers (educational, social, cultural, language, health).
• Support students in understanding graduation requirements and the High School and Beyond Plan.
• Monitor attendance, grades, credits, and other progress factors.
• Conduct home visits and outreach to strengthen family–school relationships and student engagement.
• Coordinate and support the PASS credit retrieval program, including documentation and communication.
• Plan and support family engagement activities to promote participation in education.
