West Valley School District is seeking a Student Advocate for the Migrant Education Program (MEP) in Yakima, WA. The role focuses on coordinating support for migrant students with counselors to ensure successful transitions and postsecondary opportunities.

You will collaborate with district staff, engage families, and ensure compliance with MEP regulations. Evening meetings and district travel may be required, with a competitive hourly wage of $30.

Qualifications

• Experience in education, community advocacy, or a related field, preferably working with at-risk migrant students and families.

Responsibilities

• Identify migrant students at risk of not meeting academic standards and determine barriers affecting their success.
• Develop and monitor individualized academic, transition, and postsecondary goals with students, families, counselors, and school staff.
• Connect students and families with school and community resources to address educational, social, cultural, language, health, and other barriers.
• Support students in understanding graduation requirements, including the High School and Beyond Plan.
• Monitor attendance, grades, credits, discipline, and other factors affecting student progress and successful transitions.
• Conduct home visits and provide outreach to strengthen family-school relationships and student engagement.
• Coordinate and support the PASS credit retrieval program, including student assistance, progress monitoring, documentation, and communication.
• Plan and support family engagement activities that promote family participation in education and student success.

Student Advocate- Migrant Education Program (Non-Rep Assignment)

Position Summary

The advocate will coordinate and facilitate the support and needs of migrant students with school counselors to successfully transition migrant students to the next grade level, complete high school, and promote the transition to postsecondary education or employment.

The specialist will:

• Work with the district’s Migrant Education Program’s director and school staff to identify and establish program and student goals in alignment with the district’s local plan and the State Service Delivery Plan.
• Provide supplemental support and services focused on meeting the unique needs of migrant students.
• Coordinate services with other resources migrant students may be eligible and entitled to receive.
• Support and engage families by connecting them with school and community resources, providing information and assistance related to student academic success, and strengthening family partnerships to support student achievement and well-being.
• Familiarity with MEP regulations, Priority for Service (PFS), and student mobilit

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience in education, community advocacy, or a related field, preferably working with at-risk migrant students and families.
• Knowledge of secondary education programs and state/local graduation requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and the primary language of the students and families served (e.g., Spanish).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with school and community partners.
• Strong interpersonal, time-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to analyze student data and provide targeted support.
• Flexible work schedule to meet student and family needs.
• Preferred knowledge and skills:

• Knowledge of economic, social, cultural, and psychological factors influencing migrant students.
• Experience working with secondary school aged migrant students in an educational setting.
• Knowledge of school and community resources available to migrant students and families, including technical education, career awareness, and postsecondary education opportunities.

• Ability working in a shared space with constant interruptions
• Work in school and office environments with frequent interaction with students, families, and school staff.

Occasional evening meetings, outreach events, and district travel may be required.
