Job summary

The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, NJ is seeking experienced, caring educators to serve as per-diem Middle School Substitute Teachers for the 2026-2027 school year. Substitutes provide coverage for Grades 6-8 on an as-needed basis and implement lesson plans across subjects.

You will engage early adolescents, maintain a positive classroom environment, and participate in community time, advisory, lunch, and transitions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or current senior standing in an education degree program with substantial supervised classroom experience.
  • Previous classroom teaching, student teaching, or comparable instructional experience is required.
  • Experience teaching or working closely with middle school-aged students.
  • Demonstrated classroom management skills and the ability to establish expectations, maintain routines, and redirect behavior appropriately.
  • Ability to implement lesson plans across subject areas with limited preparation time.
  • Patience, sound judgment, flexibility, and an understanding of the developmental needs of early adolescents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and administrators.
  • Comfort using Google Classroom, Veracross, and Google Workspace applications.
  • Flexibility to work within the School's rotating schedule and respond to changing daily assignments.

  • Support students during Community Time, advisory, lunch, flex periods, transitions, and other assigned parts of the school day.
  • Respond thoughtfully to students' academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs.
  • Communicate relevant information about completed work, student participation, and concerns requiring faculty follow-up.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to provide a safe and consistent experience for students.
  • Model Pingry's Honor Code and hold students to the School's academic and behavioral expectations.

Position Summary

The Pingry School is seeking experienced, caring educators to serve as per-diem Middle School Substitute Teachers at our Basking Ridge Campus during the 2026-2027 school year. Substitute Teachers provide classroom coverage for Grades 6 through 8 on an as-needed basis.

This is an active teaching role. Middle School Substitute Teachers implement lesson plans across a range of subject areas, lead classroom activities, maintain a positive and structured learning environment, and support students' academic, social, and emotional needs. They also participate fully in the life of the Middle School by covering Community Time, advisory, lunch, flex periods, transitions, and other assigned responsibilities.

You will excel in this role if you enjoy working with early adolescents, have strong teaching and classroom management skills, and can quickly establish clear expectations and positive relationships. Successful substitutes are flexible, dependable, and prepared to engage students in learning rather than simply monitor the classroom.

This is an on-call, per-diem position. Substitute Teachers must be available to work the full school day from7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. when accepting an assignment.

Schedule and Compensation

This is an on-call, per-diem position based at Pingry's Basking Ridge Campus. The frequency of assignments will vary based on the needs of the Middle School. The full workday is7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The daily rate is$170 per day.
