Job summary

School City of Hammond is seeking a middle school assistant coach to plan, coordinate, and direct assigned athletic activities. The role reports to the athletic director/building principal and focuses on participation and responsible leadership within a well-balanced educational framework.

The candidate will oversee program objectives, ensure compliance with IHSAA requirements, and collaborate with school leaders to promote safe, vigorous activities and sound sportsmanship among students.

Qualifications

• Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
• A thorough understanding of the participants: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
• Skill in the art of teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
• Desirable character and personality traits.
• High moral standards.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members and the administration.
• A thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations which pertain to the instructor’s areas of responsibility.
• Available to supervise activities beyond the school day.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible to the building principal and the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
• Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for the implementation of these objectives.
• Develop his/her part of the athletic program to the utmost, prioritizing participation over won-lost records.
• Coordinate closely with the athletic activities to avoid conflicts with the normal school program.
• Provide vigorous activities that develop the physique and cardio-vascular system.
• Develop leadership and citizenship through sportsmanship.
• Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences.
• Be knowledgeable of applicable rules and policies.
• Check equipment, supplies, schedules, and transportation as part of program operation.
• Follow Injury care procedures as outlined in the Handbook for Interscholastic Athletics.
• Ensure all participants have required physical examinations and signed Parent & Physician’s Certificates.
• Work with eligibility lists and timely IHSAA entries.
• Assist in budget planning, equipment disposition, and related duties.
