Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools seeks a part-time middle school athletic coach for the upcoming season. The role focuses on coaching 6th-8th graders, delivering fundamental skills, and maintaining safety and discipline standards.

Expected Start Date: November 2026; Season Dates: Nov 16, 2026 – Mar 6, 2027; Salary: $16.66 per hour. Candidates must understand WIAA rules and district policies and be 21+ with basic first aid/CPR.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age.
• First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.
• Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
• Knowledge of effective coaching practices/techniques for the particular sport.
• Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards.
• Ability to motivate students.
• Ability to exercise fairness in dealing with student athletes.
• Ability to relate to students of differing athletic abilities.

Responsibilities

• Supervises student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
• Plans, develops and implements an athletic program to prepare athletes physically and mentally for contests; sets objectives and informs participants of district policies.
• Organizes practice sessions after school four days a week for 7th/8th grade and two days for 6th grade; teaches basic skills and keeps records.
• Coordinates facility use with athletic director; follows budgeting and equipment procedures; handles injuries and maintains injury logs.
• Informs students/parents about eligibility and rules for the sport; posts rules to participants.
• Manages equipment issuance and returns; conducts weekly safety checks; tracks inventories.
• Makes recommendations to athletic directors on program, facilities, and transportation problems.
• Attends district and building athletic meetings; stays updated on rule changes and athletic programs.
