Job description

The Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary helps provide therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under Trauma Informed Care principles in accordance with the Registered Nurse's directions and the established treatment plan. Working under general supervision for routine situations, this role serves psychiatric patients across the life span through various treatment programs, such as educational groups and 1:1 interaction.

Responsibilities include:

1. Observing and reporting changes in patient symptoms and behaviors to the Registered Nurse to inform care plan adjustments.
2. Communicating effectively and graciously with patients and families to involve them in the care process, including facilitating patient educational groups.
3. Performing safety checks and environmental rounds, documenting procedures, and updating the Registered Nurse on progress.
4. Checking supply stocks to meet patient and nursing needs within budgetary constraints.
5. Supporting patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including measuring vital signs, preparing EKGs, transporting patients, and assisting with ambulation and elimination needs.
6. Responding empathetically to verbal and nonverbal communication from psychiatric patients to meet their needs.
7. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum educational requirements:

• Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
• Preferred: Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or Associate's Degree in human service field

Preferred experience:

• At least one year of experience in behavioral health or healthcare field

Licensure, certification, or registry requirements:

• Required: BLS (CPR) from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR (verbal and physical de-escalation) training completed within 30 days of hire
• Preferred: Nursing Aide I listing with North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; Certification through American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (NCPT) Level I-II
