Pay Range

This range is provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.

Base pay range: $52,982.00/yr - $68,874.00/yr

Summary

The AMSA positions are in multiple service lines at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, across various campuses. These are full-time positions. Shifts are primarily during the day, but some may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with schedule adjustments based on patient and facility needs.

Duties

These positions serve as a Medical Support Assistant (Advanced), providing administrative support in various clinical settings. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing clinic profiles and supporting clinic operations.
  • Collecting and updating insurance information from Veterans and eligible patients.
  • Preparing correspondence and memos.
  • Screening and receiving phone calls courteously and efficiently.
  • Accurately entering data into VISTA and scanning documents into VISTA Imaging within 24 hours.
  • Promoting Veterans registration for MyHealthyVet (MHV) and kiosk usage.
  • Following procedures for Community Care referrals.
  • Serving as the first point of contact for units, clinics, patients, and call centers regarding appointments and referrals.
  • Scheduling and pre-registering Veterans, updating demographics, and communicating with patients.
  • Interacting with patients appropriately, considering their cognitive, emotional, and developmental needs.
Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, day shift hours. Specific hours to be determined.

Additional Information

This is an open and continuous announcement establishing a standing register of eligible applicants, closing on 05/19/2025. Applications are reviewed biweekly until positions are filled. Veterans' preference is waived due to staffing shortages. Current and former federal employees must submit SF-50 forms. Positions are covered by locality-based pay. Applicants may be considered before the closing date. This announcement may fill multiple vacancies.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Background/security investigation required.
  • Online onboarding and pre-employment physical required.
  • Participation in VA health vaccination program mandatory.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or 6 months of administrative experience, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Grandfathering provisions apply for current employees.

Grade Determinations for GS-06:

  • One year of experience at GS-05 level, including clinic scheduling, high-volume appointment management, and customer service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in collaboration, organization, communication, healthcare processes, and medical terminology.
Physical Requirements

Prolonged standing, bending, reaching, lifting moderately heavy items, and keyboarding. May involve exposure to stressful situations with Veterans.
