Job description

This position is located at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The employee works within Patient Business Service (PBS), a large, complex, and very active administrative service.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Experience/Education/Combination:
    • Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for this role;
    • OR, Education: One year above high school; (Transcripts Required)
    • OR, Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level (Transcripts Required).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations

To qualify for the GS-05 level, you must have one of the following:

  • Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level; OR
  • Education: Four years of education above high school.

Candidates must also demonstrate all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities below:

  • Ability to operate computerized programs and systems to manage sensitive medical and patient identifying information (PII), electronic health records, scheduling systems, and reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology relevant to understanding diagnoses and procedures, enabling effective communication with clinical staff and patients.
  • Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently across a variety of patient support duties.
  • Effective and professional communication skills in person, electronically, and by telephone with internal and external customers.
  • Customer service skills, including identifying concerns and referring issues to appropriate staff for resolution.

Physical Requirements:

The work is primarily sedentary. The incumbent must be able to sit for various lengths of time, as well as perform bending, walking, and lifting. Must operate a computer terminal and manage multiple activities simultaneously.
