Responsibilities

The Medical Office Assistant I serves as the first point of contact for patients within the Bassett Healthcare Network. This key role in the patient-centered care team demonstrates excellence in all patient and customer encounters, including face-to-face and telephone interactions. Responsibilities include providing administrative support to ambulatory patient care teams through excellent customer service, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. The role involves accurate, timely communication with nurses and providers, scheduling patients efficiently, collecting demographic and financial information, and possibly handling revenue through payment collection and insurance processing.

  1. Reception/Call Handling: Greet patients courteously, answer phones promptly, take accurate messages, and offer MyBassett sign-up opportunities.
  2. Registration/Appointment Scheduling/Referrals: Obtain and verify patient information, schedule appointments, support referral processes, and ensure compliance with regulations.
  3. Payment Collection/Cash Handling: Convey payment due, process payments accurately, and maintain balanced cash drawer.
  4. Office Support & Confidentiality: Manage incoming information, scan and index documents, handle correspondence, and support office operations while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  5. Additional duties: Support other locations, adapt to workflows, and ensure high-quality patient experiences.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; 2-year/Associate Degree preferred.
  • Minimum one year relevant work experience required; customer service experience preferred.
  • Skills include computer proficiency, customer service, time management, confidentiality, and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Sedentary work involving sitting most of the time, with occasional lifting and reaching.
  • Repetitive motions, hearing, standing, and computer use required.
