Note: this position will primarily work in the Cardiovascular Testing Lab (90%) with cross-training in the adjoining Cardiovascular Clinic (10%).
The Cardiovascular Medical Assistant provides technical support and assists medical and nursing staff with diagnostic, non-invasive cardiac testing (e.g., treadmill tests, ECGs, Holter scans) for inpatient and ambulatory populations. They also manage ECG systems for VM and contractual business.
Cardiac Testing (90%)
- Support treadmill stress testing under RN supervision, including patient preparation, test performance, and discharge.
- Ensure correct lead placement and good hookup to support accurate clinical data capture.
- Operate stress testing equipment during patient tests.
- Adjust equipment and controls according to physician’s orders and protocols; troubleshoot and resolve issues or escalate as needed.
- Prepare reports of test results for physician interpretation.
- Independently perform ECGs under physician’s order, ensuring proper lead placement and screening results for technical quality.
- Support VM staff in the use of ECG systems/software.
- Apply ambulatory cardiac or blood pressure monitoring devices, e.g., Zio Patch.
- Perform administrative functions in the Cardiovascular Lab, including scheduling patients, preparing billing with accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes.
Cardiovascular Clinic (10%)
- Coordinate and schedule patient and provider services; maintain provider schedules and communicate changes.
- Prepare charts and maintain test result files.
- Update insurance information.
- Provide patients with preoperative and postoperative information.
- Act as the primary contact for patients, answer calls, schedule appointments, and remind patients of upcoming visits.
- Inform patients of delays, route calls per guidelines.
- Screen patients via phone and in-person, facilitate patient flow, take medical histories, vital signs, and review lab results.
- Prepare patients for exams and procedures, explain tests, and communicate results.
- Maintain exam rooms and sterilize equipment following Standard Precautions, including autoclave wrapping.
Qualifications
We require:
- High School diploma or GED
- At least 6 months of experience in a medical office/clinic or graduation from an accredited Medical Administrative Assistant, Nursing Assistant, or Medical Assistant Program.
- Ability to obtain Medical Assistant Registered (MA-R) through the State of Washington within 60 days of hire, sponsored by Virginia Mason.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Professional demeanor, positive attitude, strong communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented, able to multi-task, and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to effectively communicate with staff, leaders, patients, and physicians.
Preferred: Associate’s degree or equivalent.
