Job Overview

The Medical Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The Medical Assistant is a vital part of the healthcare team, supporting physicians, nurses, and other licensed staff by facilitating patient flow, assisting with care activities, and performing administrative duties. Responsibilities include maintaining efficient clinic operations, ensuring safety and cleanliness, promoting patient satisfaction, and safeguarding confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure smooth patient flow: escort patients, identify with two identifiers, obtain vital signs, document visit reasons, update medical history, and prepare exam rooms.
  • Assist practitioners with procedures such as ECG, venipuncture, immunizations, specimen collection, and waived lab testing.
  • Maintain high-quality care: stock exam rooms, disinfect equipment, monitor inventory, and assist with supply ordering.
  • Promote patient satisfaction by interacting professionally and courteously, assisting team members, and communicating effectively.
  • Perform delegated procedures specific to the specialty area as per protocols.
  • Complete other duties assigned by supervisors or managers.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Proof of eligibility for certification exams (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA). Acceptable documentation includes a letter from the school or certifying body for recent graduates or non-certified MAs.
  • Within six months of employment, complete one of the following certifications: CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, or NRCMA.
Additional Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification
  • Signed acknowledgment to attain certification within six months of hire
  • Strong computer skills
Preferred:
  • Completion of accredited MA training program
  • One to two years of ambulatory care experience
  • Experience with electronic medical records
