Description

The Medical Assistant is a member of the healthcare team primarily responsible for providing support to physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical staff by facilitating efficient patient flow, assisting with various patient care activities, and performing related administrative functions. They are responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow through the clinic; maintaining neat, clean, and safe patient care areas; promoting patient satisfaction by interacting professionally and warmly with patients; and safeguarding patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities

1. Assures efficient patient flow through the site:

• Escorts patient to exam room, identifies patient with 2 identifiers, and prepares patient for examination.
• Obtains accurate vital signs, per organization standards.
• Documents reason for visit and updates/confirms allergies, smoking history, and pharmacy information.
• Promptly informs the provider and registered nurse of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms.
• Prepares equipment or supplies needed for visit.
• Cleans and prepares exam room for next patient.
• Responds to needs to expedite visits and maintain patient flow, prioritizing tasks accordingly.

Assists practitioner with medical and surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols such as:

• Electrocardiogram (ECG), venipuncture, immunizations, setting up procedure trays, specimen collection, and CLIA-waived testing as directed by Provider.

Provides high-quality care by:

• Preparing and stocking exam rooms following sterilization and disinfecting protocols.
• Participating in safety rounds.
• Maintaining vaccine/medication inventory.
• Monitoring and maintaining equipment and instruments per clinic guidelines.
• Assisting in ordering supplies and disposing of expired items properly.
• Following office opening and closing procedures.

Functions as part of the patient care team and promotes patient satisfaction by:

• Accepting and performing delegated responsibilities positively.
• Offering assistance to colleagues.
• Attending staff meetings.
• Communicating effectively with patients and team members.

Performs delegated procedures appropriate to the specialty area safely and effectively.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.

Qualifications

Required:

• Proof of meeting eligibility requirements for certification exams (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA).
• For new graduates within 6 months: a letter from school or certifying body.
• For non-certified or graduates past 6 months: a letter from certifying body.
• Within first 6 months, complete one of the following certifications after up to two attempts: CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, or NRCMA.

All Candidates/Incumbents:

• High school diploma or GED.
• American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
• Signed acknowledgment of certification requirement within 6 months during onboarding.
• Strong computer skills.

Preferred:

• Completion of accredited Medical Assistant training program.
• One to two years of ambulatory care experience.
• Experience with electronic medical records.
