Description

The Medical Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Medical Assistant is a member of the healthcare team primarily responsible for supporting physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical staff by facilitating efficient patient flow, assisting with various patient care activities, and performing related administrative functions. They ensure smooth patient flow, maintain a clean and safe environment, promote patient satisfaction through professional interactions, and safeguard patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure efficient patient flow:
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, verify patient identity with two identifiers, and prepare them for examination.
  • Obtain and document accurate vital signs.
  • Record reason for visit, allergies, smoking history, and pharmacy information.
  • Notify provider and nurse of significant changes or symptoms.
  • Set up equipment or supplies needed for visits.
  • Clean and prepare exam rooms for next patients.
  • Respond to needs to expedite visits and prioritize tasks.
  • Assist practitioners with procedures such as ECG, venipuncture, immunizations, specimen collection, and waived testing, following protocols.
  • Provide high-quality care by preparing and stocking exam rooms, maintaining equipment, monitoring inventory, and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Promote patient satisfaction by interacting professionally and courteously, accepting delegated responsibilities, and communicating effectively.
  • Perform delegated procedures specific to the specialty area as per protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    Required:
    • Proof of meeting eligibility requirements for certification exams (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA).
    • For new graduates within 6 months, a letter from the school or certifying body.
    • For non-certified or graduates past 6 months, a letter from the certifying body.
    • Within 6 months of employment, complete one of the following certifications after up to two attempts: CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, or NRCMA.
    All Candidates/Incumbents:
    • High school diploma or GED.
    • American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
    • Signed acknowledgment during onboarding that certification must be attained within 6 months.
    • Strong computer skills.
    Preferred:
    • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
    • One to two years of ambulatory care experience.
    • Experience with electronic medical records.
