The University of Miami UHealth - Gastroenterology Satellites at SoLé Mia has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Medical Assistant position.

The Medical Assistant 1 (U) performs multi-skilled tasks to assist with patients' healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner, utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The Medical Assistant 1 (U) provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The incumbent adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognizes and responds to emergencies, and demonstrates professionalism. The MA provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.

  1. Utilizes creative methods to support patient's individual needs and respect patient's spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices.
  2. Establishes a trusting relationship by creating and maintaining a conducive climate for healing by being authentically present to the patient and family, identifying and managing discomforts, providing emotional support.
  3. Prioritizes and integrates multiple requests and work expectations by performing tasks appropriately, in a timely manner safely and professionally.
  4. Communicates clearly and in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members.
  5. Seeks assistance when needed.
  6. Contributes to team building by participating in unit/clinic programs and meetings.
  7. Commits to positive morale, using constructive and effective conflict resolution skills.
  8. Learns and utilizes available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent information regarding clinical situations, diagnosis, and treatments.
  9. Attains educational knowledge and competencies that reflect current clinical practice skills.
  10. Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning and is responsible for his/her own professional development and maintenance of knowledge regarding the patient population and assignments.
  11. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines including HIPAA.
  12. Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami's standards, guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.
  13. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.
  14. Accepts and provides focused constructive feedback and guidance with loving kindness in a manner that provides growth and maintains self-esteem.
  15. Abides by standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication, and protecting patient privacy.
  16. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.
  17. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis.
  18. Prepares patients for physician's care with basic instructions and information regarding examination procedures.
  19. Performs vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and documents in patient's medical record.
  20. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique.
  21. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.
  22. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  23. Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in clerical duties.
  24. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Core Qualifications

Education

  • Required High School diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.

Certification and Licensing

  • Required Medical Assistant certification
  • Required Phlebotomy certification
  • Required an active and current BLS provider card by the American Heart Association
Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes
  • Effective communication in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations professionally.
  • Problem recognition, analysis, and resolution skills.
  • Attention to detail in completing assignments accurately.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
