Job summary

IREN is seeking a Mechanical Lead to operate and maintain the Central Utility Plant and critical cooling infrastructure for data halls in Sweetwater, TX. You will monitor building systems, respond to alarms, and coordinate with engineers and vendors to protect uptime and safety.

You will guide shifts, perform thermal risk analysis, and leverage BMS/SCADA systems to optimize energy efficiency while ensuring regulatory compliance and safe operation in a 100% renewable energy powered environment.

Qualifications

• Licensed/certified stationary or operating engineer credential (or equivalent) required.
• 3rd Class Power Engineer certificate preferred.
• 5+ years of experience operating and maintaining industrial or mission-critical utility systems.

Responsibilities

• Experience supporting liquid-cooled HPC or data center infrastructure - CDUs, manifolds, pumps, filtration, and leak detection
• Proficiency with BMS, SCADA, and/or PLC systems for equipment monitoring, trending, and setpoint adjustments
• Demonstrated ability to perform thermal risk analysis, capacity modeling, and energy efficiency optimization
• Strong troubleshooting skills - diagnose root cause and implement corrective actions in a high-uptime environment
• Experience executing and managing preventative maintenance programs including contractor coordination
• Familiarity with water treatment and chemistry programs for condenser water, glycol/hydronic loops, and liquid-cooling systems
• Ability to adjust plant operating strategies under changing load conditions
• Experience with reliability metrics and KPI reporting - uptime, energy efficiency (PUE/WUE)
• Collaborating with Engineering, IT, and Leadership on capacity planning and upgrades
• Strong written/verbal communication to document trends and incidents
