Job summary

Eaton County is seeking a Mechanical and Plumbing Inspector to enforce the Eaton County Mechanical and Plumbing Codes, review plans, and inspect construction sites. The role involves handling code violations, responding to inquiries, and supporting the Prosecutor and Board of Appeals as needed.

Qualified candidates will be registered inspectors in Michigan or eligible for provisional registration, possess a valid MI driver's license, and have relevant inspection experience.

Qualifications

  • Capable of provisional registration as Inspector and Plan Reviewer.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license.
  • One year experience as Inspector preferred.

Job description

Enforces the Eaton County Mechanical and Plumbing Codes by reviewing plans for proposed projects and performing inspections during construction. Processes and investigates all mechanical and plumbing code violations. Provides information on the codes to builders, architects and homeowners. Assists the Prosecutor's Office with case preparation for all legal action required to enforce the mechanical and plumbing code.

  1. Conducts inspections of mechanical and plumbing construction for new and retro fit projects for compliance with the Eaton County Mechanical and Plumbing Codes. The projects include single family, multiple family, commercial and industrial projects.
  2. Conducts plan reviews of proposed projects. Verifies code compliance on the plans and in the specifications.
  3. Processes correction notices/violations. Issues stop work orders, oversees the enforcement process from discovery of a code violation through the required legal action and final corrections.
  4. Reviews all permit applications for compliance with the requirements of the State and County codes (i.e. contractors information, contracts, work specified and correct fees).
  5. Answers code questions from the general public, contractors, architects and local governmental units. Provides information as to appeal processes, inspection procedures and contractor complaints.
  6. Investigates contractor/owner disputes alleging code violations or workmanship problems. Prepares reports for the State of Michigan, Department of Consumer &Industry Services.
  7. Assists the Prosecutor in preparing legal proceedings against persons violating the mechanical and plumbing codes as required by the Prosecutor's Office. Serves as the County's expert witness.
  8. Serves as staff for the Construction Code Board of Appeals, as requested, and prepares background reports for the Board.
  9. Assists with the processing and filing of permits and inspection records.
  10. Performs administrative and general office duties as needed.

Education: Registered as a Mechanical and Plumbing Inspector and as a Plan Reviewer in the State of Michigan, or be capable of being provisionally registered as a Mechanical and Plumbing Inspector and Plan Reviewer.

Mechanical Requirements:

  • Must possess a State of Michigan mechanical license for not less than 1 year in 3 or more of the following categories: 1,2,4 or 9. A copy of the license must be provided.

Plumbing Requirements:

  • Must have possessed a journey license for not less than 2 years or shall be licensed as a master plumber within the State of Michigan. A copy of the license must be provided.

Experience: One year previous experience as a Mechanical and/or Plumbing Inspector preferred.

Other Requirements: Valid Michigan driver's license.

  • Walks over terrain to inspect construction projects.
  • Climbs up and down excavation sites.

  • Bends, stoops and crawls to inspect crawl spaces, attics and other areas being constructed or remodeled.
  • Uses shovel to check footings and other conditions.
  • Drives to sites throughout the County.

Working Conditions:

  • Works both in office conditions and outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Works in confined spaces.
  • Exposure to equipment and construction where a risk exists of getting cut, bruised or scraped.
  • Works in areas with loud noise (power tools, construction equipment).
  • Exposure to animals, insects and rodents at job sites.
  • Exposure to odors of paint, vapors and gases associated with construction sites.
