Eaton County is seeking a qualified Mechanical Inspector to enforce the county mechanical code by reviewing plans and performing on-site inspections for a range of projects including residential, commercial, and industrial.
The role involves processing correction notices, issuing stop-work orders, handling permit reviews, responding to inquiries, and supporting legal action as needed. A valid Michigan license or provisional status is required, plus several years of experience.
Enforces the Eaton County Mechanical Code by reviewing plans for proposed projects and performing inspections during construction. Process and investigates all mechanical code violations. Provides information on the codes to builders, architects and home owners. Assists the Prosecutor's Office with case preparation for all legal action required to enforce the mechanical code.
1. Conducts inspections of mechanical construction for new and retro fit projects for compliance with the Eaton County Mechanical Code. The projects include single family, multiple family, commercial and industrial projects.
2. Conducts plan reviews of proposed projects. Verifies code compliance on the plans and in the specifications.
3. Processes correction notices/violations. Issues stop work orders, oversees the enforcement process from discovery of a violation through the required legal action and final corrections.
4. Reviews all permit applications for compliance with the requirements of the State and County codes (i.e. contractors information, contracts, work specified, and correct fees).
5. Answers code questions from the general public, contractors, architects and local governmental units. Provides information as to appeal processes, inspection procedures and contractors complaints.
6. Investigates contractor/owner disputes alleging code violations or workmanship problems. Prepares reports for the State of Michigan, Department of Consumer & Industry Services. Testifies at hearings.
7. Assists the Prosecutor in preparing legal proceedings against persons violating the mechanical code as required by the Prosecutors Office. Serves as the County's expert witness.
8. Serves as staff for the Construction Code Board of Appeals, as requested, and prepares background reports for the Board.
9. Assists with the processing and filing of permits and inspection records.
10. Performs administrative and general office duties as needed.

Registered as a Mechanical Inspector and a plan Reviewer in the State of Michigan or be able to become provisionally certified as a mechanical inspector. Must have 4 years of experience in 1 or more of the work classifications defined in the provisions of Act No. 192 of the Public Acts of 1984, as amended, being 338.971 et seq. of the Michigan Compiled Laws, and known as the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act. 2 of the 4 years of experience shall have been at Journeyman level or higher. One year previous experience as a Mechanical Inspector preferred.
Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and a good driving record. Provide a copy of current State Mechanical Contractors License.
