Job summary

Corning Incorporated is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer in the Automation & Equipment Design group at Sullivan Park, Corning, NY. This onsite role involves ~50% travel, including international trips, and focuses on designing and installing automated equipment across manufacturing plants.

The role spans concept to production, with opportunities in robot cells, conveyors, and tooling. Strong CAD, GD&T, and vendor-management experience are essential.

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 8+ years in full design, build, and installation cycle of machine and automation systems in manufacturing.
• Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD, GD&T, and ANSI Y14.5 drafting standards.
• Hands-on experience with robot cells, AGVs, conveyors, or material handling systems.
• Familiarity with electro-mechanical drive systems, fluid power, pneumatics, and machine safety standards.
• Experience managing external vendors or system integrators through design/build/integration phases.
• Travel 25%–75% based on project phase, including potential international travel.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver custom machines and automation systems, including robot cells, AGVs, conveyors, and tooling; create CAD models and drawings; manage builds to as-built documentation.
• Define machine design specifications, tolerances, and proof-of-concept plans; evaluate data and make engineering recommendations.
• Specify and manage external vendors and system integrators across design through installation.
• Lead or support on-site commissioning, production start-up, and plant operator training.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate process requirements into reliable mechanical designs.
• Track project budgets and schedules; report status to stakeholders.
