Job summary

Corning is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Machine Systems for its Sullivan Park facility in Corning, NY. This onsite role requires up to 30% travel for installation, startup, and collaboration with customers and suppliers.

You will develop prototype and next-generation process equipment, working with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to convert lab concepts into robust, manufacturable systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with a focus on product or machine design.
• 3–5 years of experience in machine design, product design, equipment development, or related field.
• Experience with 3D design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical components, assemblies, fixtures, and process equipment using 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
• Support machine-system development from concept through design, build, installation, start-up, debugging and improvement.
• Apply engineering fundamentals, materials knowledge, fabrication methods, GD&T, and tolerance stack-ups to develop reliable designs.
• Support proof-of-concept prototype development using internal lab resources.
• Collaborate with research, development, manufacturing, electrical, controls, and operations teams to solve equipment challenges.
• Liaise with suppliers and fabricators on equipment design, build, and integration.
• Verify equipment builds and layouts against drawings and design intent; update drawings, schematics, and documentation as systems evolve.
• Prepare technical reports, progress updates, and presentations, and support safe set-up and commissioning.
