Job summary

Daimler Truck North America in Detroit, MI is seeking a Materials Engineer to advance materials science across drivetrain components, welding, and joining processes from ideation through end of life. The role emphasizes collaboration with R&D, Quality Management, Production, Manufacturing Engineering, and Supplier Management.

The engineer will conduct materials characterization, failure analyses, and process assessments, ensuring compliance with internal and external standards while identifying

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Material Science Engineering or related field with 2-4 years of experience.
  • Thorough understanding of welding, joining, and non-destructive testing techniques.
  • LSO Certification or ability to become certified.
  • Experience with ferrous, copper, or aluminum alloys and processing techniques.
  • Experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy or other advanced microscopy techniques.
  • Experience with Optical Microscopy.
  • Experience in Non-Destructive Testing methods (MPI, Dye penetrant, radiography, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Identify emerging technological developments in materials, characterization, and processing (including welding and joining).
  • Provide material and materials process expertise to solve development, component, and reliability concerns.
  • Demonstrated expertise in standard materials lab practices: sample prep, metallography, characterization, and mechanical testing.
  • Perform failure analysis investigations to support internal and external partners.
  • Perform material process analyses (joining, heat treatment, casting, forging) to ensure adherence to standards and address reliability concerns.
  • Interpret material specifications and requirements as they apply to powertrain components.
  • Identify opportunities and drive improvements for internal and external partners.
  • Collaborate globally and share knowledge across regions and business units.
