MAT/Behavioral Health Specialist

Hours: 40 hours per week, normal business hours, onsite

Contract Duration: contract-to-hire

Position Summary:

This dual-role position combines responsibilities in both research support and direct patient care. Under the guidance of the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Medical Director and Program Coordinator, the MAT Specialist will contribute to a NIDA-funded randomized controlled study—CHOICES—while also delivering direct services within the MAT Clinic.

The MAT Specialist will primarily support the CHOICES research project, which focuses on substance-using individuals living with HIV, by recruiting, screening, enrolling, and retaining participants from an outpatient clinical setting. This role requires adherence to both research protocols and clinical standards, as well as effective collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and screen participants for study eligibility from the outpatient clinic.
  • Enroll eligible participants and maintain ongoing engagement throughout the study.
  • Build positive rapport and maintain professional relationships with study participants.
  • Assist with medication monitoring visits, including adherence assessments and lab orders.
  • Conduct regular follow-up activities to promote participant retention.
  • Perform and record urine drug screens, and provide participants with feedback.
  • Distribute study incentives in accordance with research protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of confidential participant data.
  • Participate in staff training, team meetings, and ensure intervention fidelity.
  • Manage aspects of the study budget, including billing and accounting oversight.

Clinic Duties:

  • Complete necessary documentation for MAT medication coverage under various insurance plans.
  • Administer and monitor MAT medications in line with established protocols.
  • Provide one-on-one counseling sessions for patients receiving MAT services.
  • Conduct urine drug screenings and review results with patients.
  • Operate within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team model to coordinate care.
  • Attend regular clinical staff meetings and training sessions.

Administrative Support:

  • Manage inventory and order necessary supplies for clinic and research activities.
  • Submit check requests and maintain accurate financial documentation related to incentives and expenses.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), Mentally Ill Substance Abuser (MISA), or Medication-Assisted Addiction Treatment Professional (MAATP).
  • Strong computer proficiency, especially with web-based systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Prior experience in administrative support and data entry.
  • Background in case management, patient navigation, or healthcare coordination.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals with unstable housing, substance use, or mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of the communities served by the program.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW), Public Health (MPH), Psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience working on clinical or social research studies.
  • Familiarity with HIV/AIDS-related care and service populations.
  • Prior work experience in a clinical environment and knowledge of medical terminology.
