Job summary

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is leading a NEXTSEAS initiative in partnership with Bollinger Shipyards and Finnish partners to create a future-ready shipbuilding workforce. The Maritime Education Expert will collaborate across the U.S.

and Finland, helping design curricula and training approaches for implementation in education and industry programs.

• Build and maintain collaboration among educational institutions, training providers, industry, workforce organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Strengthen pathways for sustained use of the project's curricula and training models beyond the federal project period.
• Contribute independent, proactive, and innovative expertise to the MMA core project team and the wider transatlantic consortium.

Please note, this is a non-benefitted, temporary/contract, hybrid position, requiring a balance among remote work, travel and presence at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Sataknnta University of Applied Sciences (Finland.) This is a 0.90 full-time equivalent position.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), in partnership with Bollinger Shipyards and Finnish partners (Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Rauma Marine Constructions, and Länsirannikon Koulutus Oy WinNova), has been awarded funding for the four-year NEXTSEAS initiative, Next Era Xceptional Technology for Shipbuilding and Education in Americas' Seas, to create a future-ready, resilient shipbuilding workforce. This transatlantic collaboration will design and deliver an adaptive training pipeline that responds to the evolving needs of the U.S. maritime industry.

The Maritime Education Expert is a member of MMA's core grant team, together with the Project Director and the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer. The expert will work closely with team members in Finland, Bollinger Shipyards, U.S. educational and training institutions, workforce organizations, industry stakeholders, and other partners.

The Maritime Education Expert will:

• Provide practical expertise on the U.S. maritime education and workforce-training system.
• Support the development, implementation, and validation of NEXTSEAS curricula, training models, and workforce-development activities.
• Help integrate NEXTSEAS curricula and training approaches into appropriate U.S. education and workforce-development structures.
• Build and maintain collaboration among educational institutions, training providers, industry, workforce organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Strengthen pathways for sustained use of the project's curricula and training models beyond the federal project period.
• Contribute independent, proactive, and innovative expertise to the MMA core project team and the wider transatlantic consortium.

Please note: This is a grant-funded position with no eligibility for severance pay. ILAB, the Federal awarding agency for this project, retains the authority to approve all key personnel changes throughout the life of the award, as stated in 2 CFR 200.308(f).

Acknowledgement: Funding is provided by the United States Department of Labor under cooperative agreement number IL-26K75IL000030-01-00. 100% of the total costs of the project or program is financed with USG federal funds, for a total of 5,800,000.00 dollars.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Demonstrated professional experience in U.S. maritime education, technical education, workforce training, apprenticeship, curriculum development, or a closely related field.
• Strong practical knowledge of the U.S. maritime education and training ecosystem, including relevant educational institutions, training centers, workforce organizations, industry networks, and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, reviewing, or validating curricula and training models, preferably for maritime, shipbuilding, manufacturing, or other technical occupations.
• Ability to translate shipbuilding-industry workforce needs into effective education and training approaches. Knowledge of shipbuilding and the broader maritime industry is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with academic institutions, training providers, worker organizations, employers, policymakers, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, and other stakeholders, as applicable.
• Experience working across organizational and cultural boundaries; experience with international or transatlantic collaboration is preferred.
• Ability to work independently, proactively, and innovatively while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary project team.
• Strong analytical, project-coordination, facilitation, and written and oral communication skills.
• Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. Non-native speakers must provide evidence of fluency, including a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or a transcript showing completion of advanced English-language coursework.

$90,000-$96,000 annually for the 0.90 FTE appointment, based on education, qualifications, and experience.
