Job summary

The Chronicle of Higher Education is announcing a faculty opening within the Systems Engineering Department of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The position entails teaching a 12-credit load per semester across department courses, supervising undergraduate labs, and advising cadets on degree plans.

Commitment to diversity and ongoing curriculum development is expected. The role requires a PhD in Engineering or an MS in Engineering with a PE license (or equivalent path with licensure).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee undergraduate laboratory instruction and curricula, designing experiments with clear learning outcomes
  • Advise, mentor, and guide cadets on degree plans and progress toward degree
  • Develop and teach new courses as needed to meet emerging industry demands and academic goals
  • Participate in Department and Academy-wide academic committees to improve MMA’s degree programs and support the academic mission

General Responsibilities

  • Teach an academic course load of 12 credits per semester in Department courses including Electrical Power Distribution, Energy Systems, and Energy Strategy and Management, as well as core engineering courses in Electronics and Electrical Machines with associated Labs, as needed
  • Responsible for undergraduate laboratory instruction and curricula, including design of the quality, efficacy, and learning outcomes of experiments
  • Advise, mentor, and guide cadets on individual plans of study and progress toward degree
  • Develop and teach new courses as needed, consistent with emerging industry demands and the academic goals of the Department
  • Participate in Department and Academy-wide academic committees to continuously improve MMA’s degree programs and support the academic mission of the Academy.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in Engineering,OR; Hold a Master of Science in Engineering and maintain a Professional Engineer license in any State, with capability of receiving a Massachusetts license within the first six months of employment,OR; Hold either a Master of Science in Engineering or a Professional Engineer license in any State and have the ability to obtain the other within 5 years.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and/or classroom innovation
  • Demonstrated ability in student mentoring and student development
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering
  • Have legal authorization to work in the United States by the proposed start date

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching the specific Department and core courses listed above in General Responsibilities
  • Relevant Systems Engineering or Engineering Management experience in the energy industry
  • Relevant professional work experience or industry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach multiple courses, and adapt to new topics
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Salary

$75,000-$84,000, based on education, qualifications and experience. Tenure-Track appointment at the Instructor, Assistant, or Associate level will be commensurate with prior fulltime teaching experience.
