Job summary

Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, MA seeks an adjunct instructor for Marine Transportation courses. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Third Mate license with STCW qualifications required.
  • At least three years of professional maritime experience.
  • Understanding of teaching in a university setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Understand the mission of the university as a maritime academy.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

Instruct college-level Marine Transportation courses. Preferred specializations include navigation, ship-handling and shipboard safety, seamanship, and watchstanding. Potential course taught may include Integrated Navigation, Advanced Shiphandling, Coastal Navigation and Electronic Navigation. Massachusetts Maritime Academy follows a "Learn-Do-Learn" model, where our hands‑on simulation labs and classroom experiences enable our students to "apply" textbook knowledge in the field.

Please note, these are non-benefitted, temporary/contract positions

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Marine Transportation or related field;
  • Hold a Third Mate license with current Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) qualifications.
  • Have at least three years of professional maritime experience
  • Possess an understanding of teaching in the university setting
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy
Preferred Qualifications
  • Holder a master’s degree in Marine Transportation or related field.
  • Have at least three years of maritime experience or teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher learning
Salary

Pay is based on the number of credits taught at a rate of $2,343.75/credit. The semester credit load is variable, typically between 3 and 11 credits, depending on departmental needs and candidate's expertise.
