The Skilled Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing skilled maintenance, repair, preventive maintenance, and construction work throughout Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School facilities.
This position performs hands-on work across a variety of building systems and trades and assists in maintaining safe, functional, efficient, and well-maintained school buildings, grounds, and equipment. The Skilled Maintenance Technician is expected to independently troubleshoot and complete many routine repairs while recognizing situations that require assistance from Facilities Department leadership, a licensed tradesperson, or an outside contractor.

Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as needed for emergencies, projects, and special events.
Employees are expected to report during school vacations unless otherwise directed by the Director of Facilities.
Facilities employees may be required to report during snow days, inclement weather, or other school closures to support snow removal, emergency response, and building operations.
Emergency or on-call availability may be required based on operational needs.
Respond promptly to assigned work orders and maintenance requests through the school's work order management system.
Accurately document completed work, repairs performed, materials used, and outstanding needs.
Communicate repair needs, safety concerns, equipment failures, and other facility issues to Facilities Department leadership.
Assist with maintaining appropriate inventories of maintenance materials, parts, tools, and supplies.
Complete reports, forms, purchase documentation, and other records related to assigned work.
Assist with facility improvement and maintenance projects.
Coordinate and assist contractors and vendors working on school property as assigned.
Provide access to work areas and communicate relevant facility information to contractors as directed.
Monitor work areas for safety and communicate concerns to Facilities Department leadership.
Assist with receiving, moving, storing, and distributing maintenance materials, equipment, and supplies.
Perform all work in accordance with applicable safety requirements and AKFCS policies and procedures.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
Properly use personal protective equipment and follow established safety practices.
Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or other potential hazards.
Maintain appropriate security when accessing school buildings, mechanical spaces, keys, and restricted areas.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of three years of experience in maintenance, construction, building operations, or a related field preferred.
Demonstrated hands-on experience in one or more skilled building trades, with working knowledge across multiple maintenance areas.
Experience in a school, institutional, commercial, municipal, or similar facilities environment preferred.
Valid driver's license required.
Relevant trade licenses, certifications, vocational training, or specialized technical training preferred.
Working knowledge of general maintenance practices, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical systems, and general construction.
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and specialized maintenance equipment.
Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and equipment instructions.
Ability to diagnose maintenance problems and determine appropriate repairs within the scope of the position.
Ability to recognize when repairs require a licensed tradesperson or specialized contractor.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of the Facilities Department.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Basic computer skills for work orders, record keeping, and communication.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
May work in mechanical rooms, confined areas, elevated areas, or other building spaces.
May be exposed to dust, noise, fumes, cleaning products, and other conditions normally associated with facilities maintenance.
Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing ladders, and movement between school buildings.
Must be able to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment.
Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 80 pounds.
