Job summary

The City of Savage is seeking a year-round Maintenance Operator in the Parks Division of the Public Works Department to maintain parks, playgrounds, trails and ballfields for the public’s safe enjoyment.

Regular hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with on-call evenings, weekends and holidays for snow and ice operations. The role requires operating various equipment and performing field maintenance tasks in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; 3+ years in parks, trails, fields, or related maintenance.
• CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 1 year of hire; Class B valid at time of application.
• Clean driving record and DOT drug-testing history required.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled care and maintenance of City parks, ballfields, trails, shelters and ballfields.
• Operate light and heavy equipment and a variety of tools to complete tasks.
• Mow, trim, aerate and fertilize parks; groom and line ballfields; maintain irrigation systems.

Education

Job description

The City of Savage is now accepting applications from qualified candidates for a year-round Maintenance Operator position in the Parks Division of the Public Works Department. Maintenance Operators work individually and as part of a team to effectively and efficiently maintain the City's parks, ballfields and open spaces for the safe use and enjoyment of Savage residents and the general public.

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., however the position also requires prompt and consistent response to call-ins on evenings, weekends and holidays for snow and ice operations, as dictated by weather conditions.

Full 2026 Pay Scale: $31.66 to $41.70 per hour.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $31.66 to $34.24 per hour.

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled care and maintenance of City parks, playgrounds, trails, shelters and ballfields.
• Plow and haul snow and perform salt, sand, and de-icing operations using single axle and tandem axle trucks, front end loaders, pickups, skid steers and other equipment.
• Respond promptly to call-ins and work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary due to weather conditions or other emergency situations.
• Operate both light and heavy equipment, small engine equipment and a variety of tools to accomplish assigned tasks.
• Mow, trim, aerate and fertilize City parks and public spaces. Groom and line ballfields.
• Maintain and repair irrigation systems.
• Inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, benches, etc.
• Safely operate, maintain, and perform field repairs on commercial-grade chainsaws to clear brush, trim trees, and maintain public areas in compliance with safety regulations.
• Work cooperatively with other divisions and departments in the maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities and the delivery of public works services.
• Follow and promote safety rules and regulations.
• Maintain daily record of work performed.
• Occasionally provide on-the-job training or oversight for seasonal employees.

• High school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of work experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks, trails, athletic fields, parking lots, or other public recreational facilities and infrastructure, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
• Position requires a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with tanker endorsement and no restriction on air brakes, within one year of hire and for duration of employment. (Must have at least a valid Class B license at time of application.)
• Clean driving record and DOT drug-testing history.

Desirable Qualifications

• Previous experience in a municipal public works operation.
• Previous experience in ball field maintenance and/or irrigation systems.
• Public Works Certificate from the MN Chapter of the APWA, or similar specialized education or training.
• CPSI Certification

The job of Maintenance Operator requires sustained physical work in all types of weather. Position functions require the ability to manually transport awkward and heavy loads over short distances, to stoop, bend and lift overhead, to walk over uneven or snow/ice covered terrain, to manually load and unload heavy loads from trucks and other equipment, and to safely operate a variety of mechanical and power equipment and tools related to general maintenance operations. Maintenance Operators spend approximately 95% of their work hours in the field and 5% in the City's maintenance facility.
