Job summary

Gurwin Healthcare System in Commack, NY, is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic for a campus-based role. The job requires working five shifts weekly, 10:00 am–6:00 pm, including every other weekend. You will maintain HVAC, boilers, plumbing, and electrical systems across the campus and respond to emergencies as needed.

You’ll work with limited supervision in a healthcare setting, ensuring safety, reliability, and high-quality facility operations for residents and staff.

Qualifications

• Basic electrical, plumbing, and mechanical knowledge required.
• HVAC troubleshooting experience preferred.
• Boiler experience/knowledge required.
• Ability to diagnose building operational problems.
• Ability to work independently, with little supervision.
• Comfort working in a healthcare/subacute-care environment.
• Reliability during emergencies and on-call duties.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair HVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical systems, equipment, and grounds.
• Troubleshoot building problems and perform preventive maintenance.
• Complete work orders and maintenance documentation.
• Respond to emergencies and snow events; may work extended hours.
• Work around residents, including those with dementia or behavioral challenges.
• Follow fire/disaster procedures and facility safety requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• This is a campus position and not limited to one building
• Maintain and repairthe facility’sHVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical systems, equipment, and grounds.
• Troubleshoot building problemsand perform preventivemaintenance.
• Complete workorders and maintenancedocumentation.
• Respond toemergencies and snowevents, potentially working extendedhours.
• Work around residents,including people withdementia and behavioralchallenges.
• Follow fire/disaster procedures andfacility safety requirements.
• Available for snow removal as needed and on call
• Work with relativelylittle supervision.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Basic electrical, plumbing, and mechanical knowledge.
• HVAC troubleshooting.
• Boiler experience/knowledge.
• Ability to diagnose building operational problems.
• Ability to work independently.
• Comfort working in a healthcare/subacute-care environment.
• Reliability during emergencies.
• Understands written and oral instructions.
• Completes work and tasks as directed.
• Capable of using small hand and power tools.
• Capable of extensive bending, standing, walking, climbing ladders, shoveling snow and kneeling.
• Capable of lifting and moving heavy objects (up to 75 lbs).
• Capable of completing assigned tasks appropriately and without call back.
