The Fleet Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and reliability of a diverse fleet of diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles, containers, and heavy-duty equipment across one or more locations. This role leads a team of technicians and maintenance supervisors to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations in alignment with company standards and regulatory requirements. The position plays a critical role in minimizing downtime, managing costs, and improving fleet performance.
Team Leadership:Provide hands-on direction to all technician levels, including Lead Technicians and Maintenance Supervisors, across shifts and locations.
Preventive Maintenance:Develop and oversee comprehensive preventive maintenance programs; monitor performance metrics to reduce breakdowns and road calls.
Work Planning & Scheduling:Coordinate and schedule maintenance and repair work to maximize shop efficiency and reduce overtime.
Facility Oversight:Manage on-site equipment and building maintenance; ensure shop operations comply with environmental, health, and safety standards.
Vendor & Contractor Management:Oversee external repair work to ensure quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
Compliance & Safety:Ensure adherence to federal, state, and company safety regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and fire safety protocols.
Quality Control:Conduct quality control inspections (QCIs), root cause analysis of failures, and resolution tracking.
Technical Knowledge Application:Utilize advanced knowledge of diesel engine systems, hydraulic and electrical systems, HVAC, emissions, and welding to guide repair protocols and training.
Administrative Oversight:Manage payroll, employee records, eMaintenance logs, reporting, and departmental budgets; forecast weekly spend.
Training & Development:Identify training needs; coach and evaluate team members; support career progression and performance reviews.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement:Track KPIs, generate performance reports, and implement improvements to increase uptime and cost-efficiency.
High school diploma or GED required; Diesel Tech certification or technical school graduate preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Maintenance Manager or Supervisor in transportation, waste management, or similar heavy equipment-intensive industry.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA HazCom, Lock Out/Tag Out, and other safety regulations.
Advanced mechanical skills across diesel engines, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, suspension, and preventive maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to lead high-performance teams and drive operational results.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications: T2–T8 highly preferred.
Graduate of a Diesel Technical Institute.
Prior experience in the waste/environmental services industry.
Experience using fleet maintenance systems (e.g., eMaintenance, TMW, or equivalent).
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Strong customer service orientation and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Root cause problem solving and analytical thinking.
Financial acumen for cost control, budget management, and forecasting.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Collaborative leadership style that fosters team engagement and accountability.
Shop and yard environment with exposure to weather, noise, and heavy equipment.
Requires climbing, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 10 lbs), and working on/under vehicles.
Ability to work in high-stress settings with tight deadlines and performance targets.
Local travel may be required.
