MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER/SPECIALIST

Definition: Under general direction of the Operations Superintendent or Supervisor, serves as a lead worker over a small crew of maintenance workers involved in the maintenance and repair of streets and facilities, or as a specialist in the Operations Division repair and maintenance of equipment.This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Lead worker by its diversity and complexity of services provided.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Tasks:

• Supervises and participates in a wide variety of maintenance and repair work. Receives general work assignments and distributes specific work assignments to maintenance personnel. Monitors the activities of individual crew members. Establishes and enforces work standards, operating procedures and safe work practices to ensure tasks are completed in a timely and safe manner. Determines appropriate placement of barricades, traffic cones, etc. to ensure work crew safety. Inspect projects during and upon completion.
• Participates in street, right-of-way and storm drainage maintenance and repair, including emergency storm and snow removal. Builds, maintains and repairs a variety of specialized maintenance equipment. Maintains, installs and repairs equipment. Operates a variety of equipment related to area of assignment such as loaders, rollers, sweepers, backhoes, cranes, dump trucks, and cinder spreaders. Identifies maintenance and repair needs and takes corrective action. Performs other duties as assigned.
• In addition to the above lead worker duties, each incumbent possesses and utilizes a required specialization in one or more of the following: Carpentry, Welding, Equipment Maintenance, Bridge Maintenance and/or Concrete/Masonry.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of streets.
• Knowledge of methods of estimating time, cost, and equipment necessary to perform assigned work.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in work.
• Knowledge of the uses and capabilities of various street maintenance and related equipment.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision.
• Knowledge of traffic control and work zone standards.
• Skill in following oral and written instructions.
• Skill in operating a variety of field maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Skill in planning, organizing and directing the work of subordinate staff.
• Skill in the application of communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, subordinates, supervisor, and the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
• Skill in promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
• Skill in analyzing problems, identifying realistic, feasible solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions and contributing to a consensus which can be implemented.

Specialized Tools and Equipment

Mental and Physical Abilities: Mental work efforts involve interpretation and application of internal rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines requiring independent decisions and assuming responsibility which could impact the City=s maintenance program. Physical requirements include the ability to walk on uneven surfaces at construction sites, ability to move moderate (25-50 lbs) materials on occasion, and the ability to bend, stoop and perform physical labor daily.

Working Conditions: Work involves exposure to adverse weather, loud noises, heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts.
