Job summary

MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER

Definition

Under general supervision of the Operations Superintendent or Supervisor, oversees and participates in the work of a crew involved in the maintenance and repair of City properties, streets, right-of-way, signing and striping, and storm drainage systems.

Essential Functions

Tasks
  • Supervises and participates in a wide variety of street, right-of-way, signing and striping, facilities, equipment and storm drainage system maintenance and repair work. Receives general assignments and distributes specific work assignments to maintenance personnel. Monitors the activities of individual crew members. Establishes and enforces work standards and operating procedures to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner. Assists in semi-skilled trades work such as painting, carpentry, plumbing and installation of equipment. Determines appropriate placement of barricades, traffic cones, etc. to ensure work crew safety. Inspects projects during and upon completion.
  • Participates in street, right-of-way and storm drainage maintenance and repair, including emergency storm and snow removal. Plans and recommends materials and equipment needed for projects. Completes a variety of forms, records, and reports associated with project costs, problems encountered, and work completed. Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding street maintenance operations. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of streets, right-of-way, signing and striping, facilities, and storm drainage systems.
  • Knowledge of methods of estimating time, cost, and equipment necessary to perform assigned work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in work.
  • Knowledge of the uses and capabilities of various street maintenance and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic control and work zone standards.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating a variety of field maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting maps and blueprints.
  • Skill in coordinating work assignments.
  • Skill in planning, ordering, and securing materials and equipment needed to complete a job.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and the general public.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and directing the work of subordinate staff.
  • Skill in the application of communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, subordinates, supervisor, and the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Skill in promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Skill in identifying and maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive and important information while using diplomacy and tact.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, identifying realistic, feasible solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions and contributing to a consensus which can be implemented.
Materials and Equipment
  • Automobile/Light Truck Equipment (Forklift, Cinder Spreaders, Dump Truck. Plows, Roller, etc.)
  • City Policy Documents Hand Tools (Jackhammer, shovel, broom, etc.)
Mental and Physical Abilities

Mental work efforts involve interpretation and application of oral and written instructions requiring routine decision making and assuming responsibility for one’s own actions which may impact the City’s maintenance program. Physical requirements include the ability to sit while operating an automobile or equipment, ability to stand while performing work at construction sites, ability to walk on uneven surfaces in and around construction sites, ability to move moderate (25-50 lbs) materials on occasion, and the ability to bend, stoop and perform laborer duties throughout the work shift.

Working Conditions

Work involves exposure to inclement weather, loud noises, heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in street maintenance and repair work. An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or acquire within initial 6 months.
