DEFINITION

To perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in support of City street maintenance operations; to operate light equipment, trucks and hand tools; to assist with street construction, concrete and asphalt repair, drainage improvements and traffic control activities; and to perform a variety of duties related to assigned public works operations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification within the Street Maintenance Worker series. Employees at this level perform routine maintenance, construction and repair duties while learning departmental procedures, equipment operation techniques and public works maintenance practices. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are performed under supervision. As experience and proficiency are gained, employees may advance to higher-level Maintenance Worker classifications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Street Superintendent, Street Supervisor or assigned supervisory staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform general street maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Operate pneumatic tools, hand tools, light equipment, trucks and related maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Prepare, mix and apply materials used in street construction and maintenance projects.
  • Maintain records and daily logs of assigned work activities.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on assigned vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Construct forms; place, finish and repair concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks, streets, alleys and related infrastructure.
  • Break, remove and repair concrete and asphalt surfaces; perform hot patching, crack sealing and asphalt repair activities.
  • Dig ditches; backfill trenches and excavations; install storm drain pipe and drainage improvements.
  • Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices, warning signs and barricades.
  • Trim weeds and vegetation along streets, rights-of-way, medians, gutters, curbs and drainage areas.
  • Load, unload and transport materials, tools and equipment to assigned work sites.
  • Inspect assigned work areas, vehicles and equipment for maintenance needs and safety hazards; report deficiencies to supervisory staff.
  • Assist with emergency response activities, storm cleanup and seasonal maintenance operations as assigned.
  • Maintain assigned work areas, vehicles, tools and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to work well with people.
  • Any specific requirements stated in the "offer of employment letter.
  • Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

One year of street maintenance, construction, equipment operation or related field maintenance experience is desirable.

Education and Training:

High school diploma or GED required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Environmental Conditions:

Field environment with travel throughout the City; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, varying weather conditions and operation of heavy construction equipment.

Functional Requirements:

Maintain functional capabilities necessary to perform assigned duties including:

  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling or crouching for extended periods of time.
  • Operating assigned vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reading, interpreting and applying operational information, safety procedures and work instructions.
  • Observing and responding to workplace and safety conditions.
  • Exercising sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a valid driver's license required.

Must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver License (CDL) within twelve months of hire.

Must obtain any required certifications applicable to the assigned work area.
