Job summary

City of Wheeling is seeking a WWTP Maintenance Mechanic in Wheeling, WV to perform skilled and semi-skilled repairs and preventative maintenance on wastewater treatment and lift station equipment.

Under general supervision, you will install, repair, and maintain pumps, valves, gear drives, and related systems, operate heavy equipment, and maintain detailed records. A High School diploma and three years maintenance experience, plus a CDL, are required; additional certs may be needed.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma and three (3) years maintenance mechanic experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). May be required to obtain other certifications as determined by Federal, State, and Division requirements.

WWTP MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

Definition: Under general supervision of the Plant Maintenance Supervisor, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and construction of treatment plant and lift station equipment.

Essential Functions

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class).

Tasks:

  • Repairs wastewater treatment and miscellaneous plant equipment. Provides on-going preventative maintenance plan to systems and facilities. Assemble and disassemble pumps, valves, water traps, gear drive units and other equipment. Replace and install new bearing seals, packing, sleeves, etc. Set up new equipment. Make necessary parts for maintaining old and implementing new systems.
  • Performs general maintenance and labor on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. Makes concrete forms, pour concrete, lay brick, and block. Install or replace plastic and steel pipe and copper lines. Performs general building maintenance and repair work. Operate heavy equipment including backhoe, bobcat, sewer truck, crane, etc. Maintains records of materials used and labor required. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of pumps, motors, vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical and related principles.
  • Knowledge of the uses and capabilities of various tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of general building, grounds maintenance and repair practices.
  • Skill in utilizing the necessary tools and methods for repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and repairing water treatment equipment.
  • Skill in reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Skill in maintaining records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and the public.
  • Skill in the application of communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, subordinates, supervisor, and the public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, identifying realistic, feasible solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions and contributing to a consensus which can be implemented.

Mental and Physical Abilities

Mental work efforts involve interpretation and application of oral and written instructions from the supervisor which requiring routine decisions and assuming responsibilities which may impact the ability to meet the needs of the Division. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods of time, ability to walk extended periods and on uneven surfaces, moving moderate (25-50 lbs.) materials frequently, ability to move heavy (up to 100 lbs.) materials on occasion, manual dexterity sufficient to allow proper assembly, maintenance and operation of specialized job-related tools and equipment, and the ability to stoop, bend, and twist to perform general labor duties in the maintenance of the WPCD facilities.

Working Conditions

Work involves exposure to electricity, hazardous materials, biohazards, loud noises, high places, heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts.

  • High School diploma and three (3) years maintenance mechanic experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications.
