Responsibilities

Job Summary

The University Guest House & Conference Center is seeking a part-time Facilities/Maintenance Technician I to join our Facilities team. As the hotel and conference center on the University of Utah campus, we are committed to providing exceptional guest experiences through safe, reliable, and well-maintained facilities.

This entry-level maintenance position assists with basic repairs, preventative maintenance, room preparation, inspections, and general upkeep in guest rooms, public spaces, conference facilities, and other areas managed by the University Guest House & Conference Center. No previous maintenance experience is required. Training will be provided in departmental procedures, safe tool use, basic maintenance tasks, and the proper handling and escalation of maintenance concerns.

The Facilities/Maintenance Technician I performs basic maintenance and repair tasks under the direction of a supervisor or an experienced technician. Assignments may include painting, minor repairs, replacing basic hardware and fixtures, moving supplies and equipment, assisting with preventative maintenance, and maintaining clean and organized work areas. The position is expected to follow established procedures, complete assigned work safely, and seek guidance when an issue requires additional technical knowledge or experience.

Because this position provides direct evening, weekend, and holiday support to hotel guests and employees, the successful candidate must demonstrate strong communication, guest-relations, and problem-solving skills. The employee must be able to respond calmly and professionally to guest concerns, evaluate routine issues, take appropriate action within their training, and promptly communicate or escalate concerns when additional assistance is needed.

The position regularly works with maintenance team members, Guest House employees, and guests to help ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and guest-ready. Candidates should have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team while managing assigned tasks independently after receiving appropriate training.

Flexibility is essential. Work schedules may vary based on hotel occupancy, conference activity, special events, and departmental needs, with shifts primarily scheduled during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic maintenance, minor repairs, and general upkeep in guest rooms, conference facilities, public spaces, and other areas managed by the University Guest House & Conference Center.
• Assist with basic maintenance involving plumbing fixtures, lighting, doors, locks, appliances, carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring, HVAC equipment, and other building systems after receiving appropriate training.
• Complete assigned preventative maintenance tasks, room preparation, inspections, and facility checks according to established schedules and procedures.
• Respond promptly and professionally to guest and employee maintenance requests while working to minimize disruptions to guests, events, and daily operations.
• Use problem-solving skills to evaluate routine maintenance and guest concerns, take appropriate action within established procedures and training, and promptly escalation issues requiring additional technical support.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with guests, employees, supervisors, and maintenance team members regarding maintenance concerns, work status, and needed follow-up.
• Follow instructions and complete assigned work safely, accurately, and in a timely manner while seeking guidance when needed.
• Inspect assigned areas, equipment, and building systems for visible maintenance needs, correct basic issues within the employee's training, and report concerns requiring additional repair or investigation.
• Follow all departmental safety policies, procedures, and training requirements while maintaining a safe work environment.
• Assist maintenance technicians, vendors, and contractors with access, materials, equipment, and basic project activities as assigned.
• Document completed work, maintenance concerns, inspections, materials used, and needed follow-up according to departmental procedures.
• Maintain maintenance shops, storage areas, tools, equipment, and shared workspaces in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Transport supplies, materials, and equipment as needed and safely operate department vehicles and maintenance equipment when authorized and trained.
• Assist with general facility upkeep, including cleaning, room preparation, moving furniture or equipment, and other operational support as needed.
• Perform other facility maintenance duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Facilities / Maintenance Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience.

Preferences

• Interest in learning facility maintenance, building systems, and basic repair skills.
• Some maintenance, customer service, hospitality, or guest-relations experience is preferred but not required.
• Strong communication, guest-relations, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to respond calmly and professionally to guest and employee concerns.
• Ability to follow instructions, learn established procedures, and use feedback to develop new skills.
• Ability to recognize when an issue requires additional technical support and promptly seek assistance.
• Dependability and the ability to manage assigned tasks independently after receiving appropriate training.
• Familiarity with basic hand or power tools is helpful but not required.
• Availability to work a variable part-time schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Possession of a valid Utah drivers license with a good driving record, or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe, is preferred.
