The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 7 (Howard County) is currently recruitingfor a Maintenance Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician IV). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work:The main purpose of this position is to provide the inspection and technical direction of maintenance and construction-oriented projects with a wide variety of duties and direct control over force accounts. This position is the senior technical or supervisory level of work, performing a variety of engineering support tasks. The employee is expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees and may supervise a project, crew, or unit. Work is performed under the general supervision of an engineer, surveyor, or higher-level technical employee.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualifications: One and a half (1.5) years of the required experience must have involved maintenance and/or construction inspection.

*This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).


Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess and maintain a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland.


Additional Information

Special Requirements:

  • This position will be on call 24/7 for highway emergencies and natural disasters and is considered essential personnel.
  • Employees in this class are considered essential and must be available for 24-hour emergency call up with a response time of less than one (1) hour.
  • Employees will serve a six-month probationary period with the possibility of probation being extended an additional six months.
