Responsibilities

  • Sorts incoming mail by Senator, Senate Committee, Senate official, or other designated Senate support organization; gathers and wraps sorted mail into individual bundles for delivery; delivers Congressional Records, House, Senate, and Executive Calendars during sessions.
  • Sorts bulk local and commercial carrier packages; prepares packages for distribution.
  • Sorts Congressional Acceptance Site mail and packages; prepares mail and packages for distribution.
  • Collects mail, cartons, and postal equipment from offices and retail locations; transports mail to the Senate Post Office mail room; processes mail for outside or inside delivery; processes franked mail.
  • Records volumes of outgoing mail by category; digitally records signatures for accountable mail and packages; maintains a daily log of receipt of mail and packages.
  • Submits completed time and attendance in an accurate and timely manner; is fully prepared to perform duties at the beginning of the shift.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description

The Target Salary for this position is:$60,000

Mail Carrier responsibilities include sorting and organizing mail, preparing delivery routes, transporting and delivering mail and packages to designated locations, maintaining accurate tracking records, operating mail processing and tracking systems, and ensuring proper handling of sensitive or time‑critical materials. The Mail Carrier must verify delivery information, obtain signatures when required, update package status, and promptly report delivery issues or discrepancies.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Required Education

High School/GED.

  • Some experience working in a mail facility is preferred.
Required Special Skills/ Knowledge
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors, coworkers, Senate offices, and the public when answering questions and fulfilling service requests.
  • Requires physical strength and agility to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products.
  • Ability to learn and navigate handheld accountability devices.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and the ability to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support daily operational needs.
Working Conditions
  • Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • Carrying or lifting items of 50 pounds individually or a shared weight of 100 pounds.
  • Work will require being outdoors infrequently and in varying weather conditions (walking to multiple locations on Capitol Hill).
  • Frequent standing, walking, and bending.
  • Operating both twine and plastic strapping machines.
  • Employees are exposed to frequent dust.
  • Requires use of powered and non‑powered pallet jacks.
  • Pushing and pulling heavy hand trucks and mail carts.
  • Using cleaning implements.
  • Employee is required to wear a uniform.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  1. Be a U.S. citizen;
  2. Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B);
  3. Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
  4. Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law).
