Job Description

The Machinist/Toolmaker is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. Responsibilities include fabricating prototype parts, modifying production parts for testing, and ensuring all work conforms to drawings, blueprints, and sketches.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, and setup requirements.
  2. Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions on materials or workpieces as guides for machining.
  3. Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and accessories on machines such as mills, lathes, grinders, etc.
  4. Calculate and set controls to regulate machining parameters or input commands for computerized machines.
  5. Start and monitor machine operation, adjusting controls as needed to detect and correct malfunctions.
  6. Verify finished workpieces meet specifications and assemble parts into complete assemblies.
  7. Install machined parts in mechanisms and test for functionality.
  8. Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts as required.
  9. Collaborate with engineers and production personnel to resolve machining or assembly issues.
  10. Support the fabrication of prototype parts and modify existing parts for testing.
  11. Perform other duties including training, administration, housekeeping, and quality assurance.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma, vocational training, or apprenticeship with 2-4 years of experience, or 10 years in tool and die work.
  • Proficient in setting up and operating lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders, and CNC machines.
  • Experience in metal fabrication, assembly, and inspection with precision instruments.
  • Knowledge of blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications.
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and machine control programming.
  • Leadership experience and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to manage conflicts, analyze problems, and ensure quality and safety standards.
