Job summary

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale invites applications for an Area Coordinator in Residence Life. The AC provides year-round leadership for a defined area of campus housing, supervises graduate and student staff, and assists with guest housing during the Summer Conference season.

The role requires crisis-response experience and strong supervisory skills. Responsibilities include co-managing residence halls housing hundreds to thousands of students; recruiting and training staff;

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree or US equivalent required.
• Minimum two years full-time experience coordinating/directing residence halls.
• Experience in crisis response, or high-pressure situations.
• Experience advising a student group and supervising/mentoring student staff.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Flexible work schedule, with evenings, nights, and possible weekends.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, recruit, train, supervise and evaluate up to 50 student staff in various roles; hold regular supervisory meetings.
• Participate in recruitment, selection, and training of full-time professional staff.
• Serve as primary contact for Overnight Desk Assistants and the ODA program while buildings are occupied.
• Monitor trends in overnight incidents and develop intervention strategies.
• Coordinate goals with Residence Life committees and develop a strategic plan to achieve them.
• Recruit diverse candidates through mentoring in staff selection processes.
• Promote the department’s area team with campus partners and staff.
• Provide training and development for professional and paraprofessional staff in community building and crisis management.
• Manage area programming with Program Coordinators and Hall Directors; advise RSO development.
• Adjudicate conduct cases and ensure security through building access and cameras.
• Oversee leadership programs and travel for conferences; supervise on-call coverage.
• Conduct first-level review of incidents and ensure timely reports.
