Base pay range

$30.00/hr - $40.00/hr

Title: Litigation Paralegal (bilingual, part-time, mostly remote)

Reports to: President/Managing Attorney Stephen R. Miller

Compensation: $30-$40 per hour depending on credentials and experience

Overview: Coalition Legal is the largest pro bono restorative justice law firm in Lake County, Illinois. We seek a bilingual (English/Spanish) paralegal to join our growing practice of three attorneys and two community outreach specialists, primarily practicing in Lake County courts. Our attorneys provide legal representation to low-income Lake County residents on a wide variety of legal matters involving restoration of rights due to old criminal records and related legal problems, allowing clients to achieve their full potential for employment, housing, and personal dignity.

This is a flexible job paying a competitive salary, depending on experience; 15-20 hours a week with a customizable remote schedule; occasional office work at the Office of the Waukegan Township Supervisor in downtown Waukegan, Illinois.

Job Description:

The paralegal is the core paraprofessional of the practice, assisting attorneys in representing clients who petition the court to expunge and seal their old criminal records; assist with driver’s license and other professional license reinstatement; and preparation of healthcare waivers which allow clients with certain criminal backgrounds to work in certain healthcare fields.

The paralegal is responsible for direct client interaction, preparing necessary documentation, and assisting with client preparation for contested hearings in Lake County Circuit Court.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intakes in Spanish and English as people apply for representation for expungement, sealing, executive clemency, certificates of rehabilitation, professional licensing and appeals, healthcare waivers, driver’s license restoration, and cannabis expungement pursuant to Illinois law.
  • Prepare and file petitions to expunge and seal.
  • Prepare other pleadings and notices such as motions to vacate, motions to reconsider, motions to continue hearings, notices of appeal, and similar matters.
  • Maintain the PracticePanther integrated case management system including docket, file opening/closing, and related activities.
  • Assist clients in obtaining letters of support, drug tests if needed, making payments of restitution and other necessary steps to achieve a successful ruling.
  • Assist in preparing clients for their hearings.
  • Build relationships with clients based on trust.
  • Manage communications with clients and staff.
  • Abide by local, state, and federal laws and behave ethically.
Required Qualifications:
  • Fluency in Spanish (preferred).
  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with integrated case management software, Adobe Pro, Excel, Google Docs, Calendly, Word, Dropbox; solid general office skills, familiarity with statewide e-filing platform Odyssey (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum one year of litigation experience preferred.
  • High-speed home internet service.
