Job summary

  • Prepare, edit, and proof briefs, motions, discovery, pleadings, memos, and reports.
  • File briefs, pleadings, and other filings in district/state/federal court.
  • Schedule and coordinate logistics for meetings, travel and depositions.
  • Maintain calendars including court deadlines and appearances.
  • Enter billable time and edit time and pre-bills as needed.
  • Process expense reimbursements.
  • Answer incoming calls and distribute mail.
  • Open and maintain client and case files and organizational documents.

Job description

Burr & Forman LLP has an immediate opening in our Birmingham, AL office for a full-time litigation legal practice assistant. This role involves performing complex administrative tasks that require knowledge of legal terminology and processes, including preparing and filing legal documents, managing calendars, and coordinating logistics for meetings. The ideal candidate should possess strong organizational and communication skills, with at least two years of experience in a legal setting. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are essential. This position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to the legal team while managing a variety of responsibilities.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Prepare, edit, and proof briefs, motions, discovery, pleadings, memos, correspondence and other similar documents and reports
  • Perform complex administrative duties requiring knowledge of legal terminology and legal processes
  • File briefs, pleadings, and other filings in district/state/federal court
  • Schedule and coordinate logistics for meetings, travel and depositions
  • Maintain calendars including court deadlines and appearances
  • Enter billable time and edit time and pre-bills as needed
  • Process expense reimbursements
  • Answer incoming calls, prepare documents for shipment, and distribute mail
  • Open and maintain client and case files and organizational documents
  • Respond to inquiries for information
  • Other responsibilities as needed

THE ESSENTIALS

  • At least two years of experience as a litigation legal secretary/assistant in a law firm or corporate legal department environment; experience in labor and employment litigation support is a plus
  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of district, state, and federal court and electronic filing procedures
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and ability to type 50 wpm
  • Highly organized, detail-orientated, and proactive with a desire to take ownership
  • Balance competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment, exercising patience and professionalism during stressful situations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Some overtime may be required
