Job summary

AEP in the United States (Ohio) is seeking a Line Mechanic C to install, maintain, and inspect overhead and underground electrical facilities. The role builds on Line Mechanic D qualifications and requires progression through multiple C classifications with increasing responsibility and ability to work on energized equipment.

Responsibilities include assembling and testing lines, supervising junior workers, and ensuring safe switching procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience.
• OR one year of related line experience defined as: successful completion of a one-year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.
• OR an Associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.

Responsibilities

• Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers, fixtures, structures and other associated equipment under supervision as skill level dictates.
• Competence to work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts after completing C-100; assist with work on energized up to 600 volts under supervision.
• Test, de-energize and ground URD cable, splice and terminate URD cable, troubleshoot and energize URD cable and equipment after C-100; under supervision as skill dictates.
• After C-200, work on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision; use volt meters and other test equipment.
• Cover primary conductors and equipment under supervision after C-200 as skill level dictates.
• Cover, transfer or move primary conductors and equipment after C-300 under direct supervision.
• During first twelve months, assist with work on energized lines, cables and equipment under graduated supervision.
• Progress from direct supervision to immediate supervision as skill grows.
• Replace fuses and operate switching devices energized at any voltage under general supervision.
• Build and erect equipment mountings and overhead transformer installations.
• Perform proper tagging procedures while switching energized circuits.
• Perform inspection and trouble-shooting of lines.
• Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
• Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards for supervisor review.
