Job summary

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor to promote safe swimming, teach youth lessons, and maintain pool safety at Pearl Street Family YMCA in Tacoma, WA. The role combines lifeguarding with progressive swim instruction and engagement with members in a diverse community.

Required certifications include Lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen administration, with ongoing training and a commitment to inclusive, safe programming for all ages.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications required.
• Six months or more of related aquatics experience preferred.
• Experience working with youth and diverse populations.
• Able to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day and other trainings as required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure member safety by vigilant water and deck surveillance and enforcing pool rules.
• Instruct swimming lessons for youth with progressive skill development.
• Perform rescues, administer first aid and CPR per YMCA policies.
• Prepare lesson plans aligned with class ages and abilities.
• Attend trainings and maintain safety guidelines for pool and aquatic areas.
• Build positive relationships with members and staff.
